Augmentative and Alternative Communication Research Project

Sutherland House Children’s Services undertook research into whether computer-based voice output communication aids (VOCA) can help children with autism who are non-verbal, or who have severe expressive disorders, to communicate.

The project was led by Sutherland House School, with the collaboration of the Autism Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. The research is practice-based and the fieldwork was be carried out at Sutherland House School.

he project started in March 2008 and was completed in March 2010.
