Augmentative and Alternative Communication Research Project

Sutherland House Children’s Services is undertaking research into whether computer-based voice output communication aids (VOCA) can help children with autism who are non-verbal, or who have severe expressive disorders, to communicate.

The project is being led by Sutherland House School, with the collaboration of the Autism Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. The research is practice-based and the fieldwork will be carried out at Sutherland House School.

The fieldwork is due to be carried out from September 2008 until April 2009. Once data analysis is completed, the research report will be written and submitted for peer review in Autumn 2009.
